Handbags aren’t just for makeup and change purses any more. As women’s lives become busier and they spend more of it away from home and on the go, handbags have been required to serve a more useful purpose. Ask a woman to show you the contents of her purse and you will find everything from diapers and bottles to organizers, notebooks, and cell phones.
The key to having a well-equipped, organized handbag is to size it correctly and to ensure it has enough pockets and dividers to hold everything and make it easy to access. A sturdy handbag will stand up to the rigors of every day life, whereas a cheap knockoff will begin to literally fall apart at the seams quickly, so investing in a quality handbag will save you money in the long run.
Find a handbag with many separate areas and not just one big storage area. If everything is lumped together, it will be difficult to find in the mess and items rubbing against each other all the time may damage some of the contents of your purse or cause leaks in liquid contents. The separate compartments should have zippers or another type of closure on each one so that their contents don’t fall out when the purse is upside down. If you find you need even more separate pockets, purchase a few clear see-through pouches so that you can keep their contents separate and be able to find them at a glance.
A well-equipped business woman’s handbag is almost like a portable office and should be able to carry the following: day planner, pens, notepaper, business card holders (for your cards and the cards you pick up during the day), cell phone or PDA, and an envelope to tuck receipts into. Leather is a good choice of material for a professional’s handbag as it looks elegant and can be matched to other carry-alongs like briefcases and luggage.
Organized moms’ handbags should be able to accommodate: an extra diaper or two for emergencies when the diaper bag is not handy, a spare soother, wet wipes, both for bottoms and hands, healthy snacks, and even a bottle for times when it is inconvenient to drag around a full diaper bag. Leather or canvas is a good choice to stand up to the busy life of a mom.
Handy items to carry in any handbag include: a small sewing kit for emergencies, gum or breath mints, a small folding umbrella, a miniature multi-head screwdriver, medications including aspirin, bandages, a granola bar or other long-storage snack, and a camera. Larger handbags can accommodate bottled water, a novel, hand cream, a complete makeup kit, and reusable cloth shopping bags.
Much more is required of a handbag these days and it plays a larger role in most women’s lives. Choosing the right handbag can make the difference between being organized and calm, and being unprepared.
