To newcomers in photography, technical tricks and tips can sometimes seem caught in a tangle of acronyms whose meanings fail to shed much light on the subject at hand, in a similar fashion to the wealth of terms in search engine optimization that span from SEO to PPC and well beyond. One of the most common acronyms encountered by photographers, web designers, and other image specialists is “ISO,” which simply refers to the International Organization for Standardization. This noise can create a blotchy or static feel to a photograph, created by signals unrelated to the subject of the photograph; in digital photography, the sensor itself can produce a fair amount of noise, sometimes ruining the picture.

Achieving a proper ISO speed in tandem with a wisely chosen shutter speed and aperture balance is the basis for a technically superior photograph. Though on first glance the term might seem deceptively convoluted, ISO is a relatively straightforward, yet essential, acronym at the very heart of photography.

The Old West Lives in Old Town Temecula

In the Old West gunslingers walked the streets, stage coaches rattled into town, and the buildings had distinctive wooden facades. Well, the days of the Old West are long gone, but there is at least one place where it still lives: Old Town Temecula.
Temecula’s old town looks the part of an Old West town. The streets are lined with historical buildings that date back to the 1800’s and the turn of the century and have preserved the style and character of that period. These old buildings look like they were built as part of a movie set, but they are a part of real history.

Some of Temecula’s Wild West history is somewhat more tarnished than the Wild West we see in the movies. An old mass grave outside the town bears accusatory witness to the Temecula Massacre of December, 1846.

2009 also marks a brighter spot in Temecula’s history. Temecula’s first Post Office opened 150 years ago, and was only the seventh one in California south of the Tehachapi Mountains. At the time the Post Office operated out of Magee Store, though it has moved several times since. The office opened in 1859 just 9 years after California became the 31st state in 1850.

Temecula revels in it rough and tumble history and that is never more evident than during the annual Western Days celebration that is held each year in May. During Western Days, costumed actors walk the streets as Old West characters performing humorous skits to the delight of Temecula residents and those who travel to the city for the occasion. The festival also includes a working blacksmith exhibit, a calf roping lessons, live music and more. For many, the culmination of Western Days is Old Town Temecula’s Chili Cookoff. This event is a sanctioned International Chili Society district cook off and brings out fierce competition each year.

This year there will also be a Halloween themed recreation of the Old West with the ghosts of Old West figures walking the streets and hiding in three haunted mazes set up in Old Town Temecula for the first annual Haunted Old Town celebration. Visitors to Old Town Temecula during this six day event might mistake it for a true Ghost Town!

Its historic buildings and the actors taking part in the Old Town celebrations aren’t Temecula’s only tie to the movies. The city was also home to Erle Stanley Gardner who created that famous TV and movie personality Perry Mason, who could make any hardened criminal crack on the witness stand and betray his guilt.

Residents of Temecula enjoy Old Town’s Wild West character and the many celebrations the city offers each year as it tries to recapture the events of America’s not so distant past.

Cedar is one of the most common lumbers used for decking and because of its softness, you may not even need to use spiral nails. Pressure-treated lumber requires longer nails or even better screws to ensure that the joints stay firmly attached. Even though screws are more expensive than nails, it is important to use them with pressure-treated lumber because of this type of lumber’s extreme pulling power. If you fill in the holes with wood filler and then stain the entire deck, it will give it a uniform appearance. Another option even more durable than wood filler is auto body filler since it is harder and less likely to pop out of the holes.

    Decking is usually installed wet and then allowed to shrink. The fact the boards shrink is important to keep in mind when spacing the decking. By spacing the wet lumber at an 1/8 inch, when the wood dries out you will have gaps around ¼ inch, which is reasonable for wooden decking. This gap will allow for the proper amount of expansion when it rains and allow the rain to escape and not pool on the decking surface and damage it.

The cobbler has been an important part of communities throughout the world as long as there has been footwear. Cobblers repair the shoes that shoemakers or cordwainers make. Until recently, shoes were a highly valued purchase that the wearers would protect and keep in good condition. The alternative was often to go without shoes which was often a dangerous prospect when work still needed to be accomplished and an unprotected foot was likely to suffer damage.

After the Second World War, industrialism ramped up in many parts of the world, especially in England and the United States. Goods that had been traditionally produced by hand by skilled craftsmen were now being mechanically mass-produced in factories by the ton. Shoes were no exception. Instead of being the serviceable footwear they had always been, shoes were now being billed as fashion statements. Consumers were enticed to have a dozen or more pair in all different colors and styles. Mechanizing the process had brought the cost down to the point where people could afford to own many pairs of shoes- and to throw them out and buy new when they became worn or even just unfashionable.

Tuning a Room for Music

The study of sound is called acoustics. Acoustic engineers work to design not only audio equipment such as loudspeakers, but also spaces in which quality sound is important. These spaces might include concert halls, public buildings, theaters, sports stadiums, and many others. Of course, many acoustic engineer are drawn to the field because of their love for music, and many of them are musicians themselves.

Acoustic engineers and musicians both tend to be very particular about the way their music sounds. Whether it is a recording they are making, or a live presentation in a newly designed amphitheater. They expect the sound that reaches the listener’s ear to be the same as it was when it was created by the musical instrument.
